FFP Vacants Flashcards
Paramount Concern at Vacants
Life hazard & Safety of members involved in operation
At large &/or advanced fires exterior ops should be primary tactical consideration. IC may vary if _
Life hazard or extreme exposure protection is critical
Vacant Marking characteristics
Where shall primary markings for Vacants be placed
Lime yellow reflective paint Sqaure 18” X 18” w/2” wide lines. “X” is only marking used
Alongside front entrance. Additional markings may be made such as Fire escape, roof bulkhead, etc
Determination of exterior/interior attack may have to be made by 1st Officer. General Considerations “FUEL”
Fire extent/location, Units responding on initial alarm, Exposure problem, Life in bldg
Diesel fuel oil fires vs Gasoline vapor fires
Diesel develops slowly at the start but progresses rapidly as vapor production intensifies. Heat will be for longer duration than gasoline. Gasoline burns w/lightning rapidity w/single heat production
All members responding to Vacant bldgs, especially _ are cautioned to note method used to seal these buildings in their size up
Roof & OV FF
Priority Order for applying firefighting tactics “LECE”
Life, Exposure, Confinement, Extinguishment
Most Important Consideration in size up
Protection of life
CR PD LW: Primary consideration= collapse
How shall a HL stretched off a TL be operated
Can 2 HL’s be used in the interior of vacants
One 1 3/4” w/minimum Eng & Lad personnel enter bldg from bucket for final extinguishment floor by floor
Yes in a large area such a NLT for prompt extinguishment
“RO” Marking means
Roof Open & need for future vertical ventilation minimal. Made over bldg condition marking
Advantages of ILP “FAST SLEEP”
Fast water on fire, Shorter HL stretch, Lower engine pressure req’d, Equipment on rig closer to fire, ECC in better position to observe, & Pumper in position for exterior streams
Disadvantages of ILP “Damage WA/TCH”
Damage to rig from falling debris, Water supply limited to supply line layout & hydrant supply potential, AL/TL blocked out by pumper, full Capacity of pumper may not be possible. Hydrant may be OOS & pumper may not be able to proceed to next available hydrant due to being blocked out by later arriving units
Primary Emphasis at Vacant fires
Exterior Attack
CR PD LW: Exterior attack outside of collapse zone unless fire is minor or confined to small area
Can TL boom be operated at right angles to chassis at low elevations
Should NOT. Boom should be operated at narrow angles, over the front or rear of rig
In Vacant bldg areas: TL shall carry how many lengths of their own 3 1/2” hose
4 or 5 lengths on side of rig
