Q

Diesel fuel oil fires vs Gasoline vapor fires

A

Diesel develops slowly at the start but progresses rapidly as vapor production intensifies. Heat will be for longer duration than gasoline. Gasoline burns w/lightning rapidity w/single heat production

Q

Advantages of ILP “FAST SLEEP”

A

Fast water on fire, Shorter HL stretch, Lower engine pressure req’d, Equipment on rig closer to fire, ECC in better position to observe, & Pumper in position for exterior streams

Q

Disadvantages of ILP “Damage WA/TCH”

A

Damage to rig from falling debris, Water supply limited to supply line layout & hydrant supply potential, AL/TL blocked out by pumper, full Capacity of pumper may not be possible. Hydrant may be OOS & pumper may not be able to proceed to next available hydrant due to being blocked out by later arriving units

16
Q

When roof has been cut “RO” shall be spray painted where?

A

On both inside & outside of bulkhead as well as front of bldg

17
Q

Can an interior attack be made at Vacant fires

A

IC must 1st perform risk assessment of current structural stability, Known life hazards, Size & location of fire, & verify safe access to fire

18
Q

Paramount importance at vacants

A

Personal injury hazard to FF’s (PI-PI)
CR PD LW: Paramount importance Positioning of 1st HL for early extinguishment or control of contents fire that has NOT extended to structural components

19
Q

If a Unit finds a vacant bldg in their district _

A

Notify all units on 1st alarm & Consider entering into CIDS

20
Q

Most important aspect determining Initial Attack Strategy at vacants

A

Structural stability of building

21
Q

When Vacant is heavily involved on arrival, place hose stream _

A

Between involved building & most severe life exposure. If NO life endangered protect greatest amount of property

22
Q

What tactic shall Engines consider at Vacants

A

In Line Pumping

23
Q

Placement of TL in Vacant lot: Survey must be done by _

A

TL Officer & LCC

24
Q

In Vacant bldgs all flrs below fire area must be examined for _

A

Incendiary devices- 2 FF’s should be assigned to search all flrs below operating forces

25
Q

Definition of Vacant bldg

A

Structure completely unoccupied & all efforts to maintain bldg in livable condition abandoned by owner

26
Q

Vacant building incorrect:
A. The primary emphasis in vacant building operations is that of an exterior attack
B. Primary markings shall be made above the front entrance. If deemed advantageous, additional markings shall be made at other places (fire escape, roof bulkhead, etc)
C. Structural stability of the bldg will be the most important aspect determining the initial attack strategy i.e. interior or exterior
D. Protection of life is the most important consideration in size up

A

B. Primary markings shall be made ALONGSIDE the front entrance

27
Q

The IC may implement an interior attack at a vacant building fire after a risk assessment has been performed based on the following factors. Which is incorrect?
A. Previous structural stability of the building.
B. Any known life hazard.
C. Size and location of the fire.
D. Verification of safe access to fire area.

A

A Current stability of bldg

28
Q

If the 1st ECC encounters any hydrant problems, he should notify _

A

The Officer of his Unit and 2nd arriving Eng Company

29
Q
What is the most important consideration in the size up of a vacant building?
A. Protection of life
B. Structural stability of the building
C. Number of units available on scene
D. Markings on the building
A

A

30
Q

Correct:
A. Life hazard and the safety of members is the most important aspect determining the initial attack strategy
B. The decision as to method of attack must be made by the officer in command after a careful evaluation
C. The structural stability of the vacant building will be the paramount concern when determining the initial attack strategy
D. The structural stability of the vacant building is the most important consideration in size up

A

B

A. Life hazard and the safety of members involved in the operation is the paramount concern Vacants
C. Structural stability is the most important aspect determining the initial attack strategy 2.2.1
D. Protection of life is the most important consideration in size up. 2.2.3

31
Q

Factor to be most important aspect in determining initial attack strategy of interior or exterior attack
A. Structural stability of vacant bldg
B. Protection of life
C. Protection of exposure
D. Protection of greatest amount of property

A

A 2.2.1

32
Q

Not a disadvantage of ILP
A. Water supply limited to supply line layout and hydrant supply potential
B. May not be possible to attain full pumper capacity
C. Possibility of pumper being blocked out by AL/TL
D. Hydrant OOS- pumper may not be able to proceed to nest available hydrant

A

C Pumper blocking out AL/TL

33
Q

You are working a day tour in Engine 15 and receive a run with Ladder 18 for a dumpster fire. As you arrive you find a fire in a vacant 3 story OLT. As the IC at this fire, you may decide to use an interior attack after considering all but which one of the following factors?
A: The current structural stability of the building
B: Size of the building
C: Any known life hazard
D: Verification of safe access to the fire area

A

B. Size and location of the FIRE.
“VACS”

34
Q

Incorrect Vacants Lad Ops
A: In vacant bldg areas, many TLs carry their own 3 1/2” hose (4 or 5 lengths on the side of the rig) which can be stretched by the apparatus as it proceeds into position.
B: Vacant bldgs should be searched as quickly and early into the operation as possible. After a rapid primary search is conducted, members should return to an area of safety.
C: When ladder companies are not otherwise required, these members should assist in the stretching of lines.
D: One member with a radio must be listening for any messages or conditions that may affect roof conditions.

A

B. Since vacant buildings have low victim potential, they should be searched within the limits of safety after building conditions have been evaluated and the fire has been largely extinguished. Vacants
