TB Emergencies 3 & 4 Flashcards
Street shut down of hydrant- remove cover & place wrench of fitting turning _ times
Counterclockwise 17 times. Around 12 turns noticeable decrease in water flow.
Where is the nut for hydrant shut-off usually located
Off-center on street side of chamber
What info is given to Dispatcher for downed wires “LAP”
Location, Address, Pole number & request forthwith power removal & priority response by utility company. Request BC if not assigned
Can FD move electrical wires if immediate life threatening conditions
No- take NO action removing electrical wires from people &/or vehicles until De-energized by utility company
How many feet w/HL from downed wires
At least 25’ with fog nozzle
Can substations be entered by FD units
Unless human life is in jeopardy, do NOT enter substation until arrival of power company rep. No metal tools/ladders
Oil burner control is generally painted red & located _ in PD’s & _ in OLT, brownstones.
PD: Top of interior stairs cellar stairs
OLT, Brownstone, Rowframe- top of interior cellar stairs
NLT/Apt houses- outside of Boiler room
What does it mean if sides of boilers are cherry red
Boiler needs water. Do NOT add water until boiler cools down first
Three types of suspended scaffold emergencies
Unoccupied swinging scaffold, occupied stalled scaffold, & occupied hanging or off-level scaffold
Which rope is used to secure scaffold to prevent movement
Utility rope- same for securing roof rigging
Are members allowed onto an unoccupied scaffold
Can HT be lowered to stranded workers on scaffold
No- all operations shall be from within the building or roof level
Yes if stranded on a windowless side of the bldg: Lower from above
If the Roof team determines safety lines are suspect, what shall they do?
Lower LSR to workers & attach them to workers harnesses
If the wire rope hoist line is jammed within unit- can it still be used?
If jammed- Never allow workers to attempt to continue to operate the hoist
Last resort for removal from scaffold
Window removal to retrieve stranded workers. If possible, haul worker up via an open window
What if a hoist motor is overheated?
Allow to cool for at least 15 minutes & have worker push reset button on hoist
T/F Generally, there is no need for any firefighter to be lowered by a life saving rope to reach stranded workers.
True
Unless the workers are in danger of falling, or some other imminently dangerous condition dictates immediate action, removal will be accomplished with the _
High angle rope equipment.
Can High Angle equipment be used to pull up a victim or only lower a victim on a scaffold?
Both lowering and pulling up of victim on scaffold. Use Victim’s harness
Members were discussing the location of where the water main typically enters a building. Incorrect
A: It is usually near the front building wall (often in the middle of the building.)
B: The pipe is the coldest pipe in the building and may also have condensation on the outside.
C: Look for the armored ground cable which may be attached to the main from the electric meter.
D: Listen for the sound of running water or feel for vibration.
A) It is usually near the front building wall (often in a corner).
TB Emerg 3 3.5 C
Suspended scaffold incorrect
A. If are welding is being performed insure that the unit has a proper secondary ground
B. Prior to removing a window, seek assistance from bldg maintenance or a glazier
C. If necessary to dismantle the scaffold, perform this action from the exterior of the bldg
D. Before leaving the scene, insure all hazardous conditions have been alleviated
C. Must be done from INTERIOR of bldg. Insure roof rigging/anchoring is secure. Await arrival of Derricks & Crane Unit of Bldg Dept.
3.5 TB 4
Occupied scaffold incorrect
A. If the scaffold has a jammed wire rope hoist, have the workers momentarily operate the hoist in an attempt to free the wire
B. Locate a window near the workers & attempt to speak with them. If not possible, lower an FD HT to the worker
C. Utilize either an AL/TL if within reach of either
D. Send a team to roof to inspect the scaffold rigging system & workers safety lines. If safety lines are suspect, lower the end of a Life Saving Rope to them & allow them to attach the snap hook to their safety harness
A If jammed NEVER allow workers to attempt to continue to operate the hoist, as this can sever the wire rope and cause that end of the scaffold to fall
5.3 TB 4
Radiator steam leak where the flow valve has blown off. While attempting to close the flow of steam incorrect
A. It may be necessary to shut down the steam at the boiler
B. Insure that the flow handle is in the closed position
C. Use of cotton thread, crayon, string or wax may help in obtaining a seal
D. Wear gloves or use a towel over the main valve to divert the flow of steam while resetting the valve
B Make certain flow handle is in OPEN position (This is important). Valve must be open to allow free passage of steam. TB 3 7.2
