16
Q

Where does the FE team report for compactor fires

A

Locate & operate in compactor room- shut electrical power to unit before operations commence. Have Eng operate HL from above. Use garden hose to wet down debris

17
Q

What tactics are used if fire extended from compactor into room?

A

Treat as a cellar fire

18
Q

_ an enlarged area near the top of incinerator shaft at or above roof level

A

Fly Ash Collector. 4’ X 4’ or large as a small room

19
Q

Fires in incinerators and compactors: incorrect?
A. In City Housing Projects, the chute door on the first floor will always be colored RED for incinerator and GRAY for compactor.
B. Extension is unlikely but is much more probable in the case of a compactor than an incinerator.
C. In the case of a compactor fire, the possibility of extension is greater in the unit than in the chute.
D. For incinerator fires, the operational priority is to clear the blockage. For compactor fires, the operational priority is to extinguish the fire.

A

A. In City Housing Projects, the chute door on the first floor MAY be color coded: RED for incinerator, GRAY for compactor. sect 1.3.D

20
Q

Incorrect for blockage at incinerator
A. If you open a chute & smoke comes out, the blockage is generally above that floor
B. If you open a chute door & draft goes inward or little smoke comes out, blockage is generally below that floor
C. If smoke is present on uppermost fl there may be a clogged or blocked spark arrestor or fly ash collector
D. Eng company members may be used to assist w/searching & venting provided that at least 2 members from the Eng remain in the lobby

A

D Officer and at least 2 Eng members

21
Q

Incorrect for incinerator blockage
A. Do not drop anything down the chute that is not secured with a rope
B. Whenever a blockage cannot be freed, consider burning it off
C. If all else fails HL can be used from fl above
D. Whenever fire is put out flooding shaft w/water, auxiliary gas or fuel burner must be shut down, & it must be shut down before flooding the shaft
E. FFs attempting to clear a blockage from the base of the incinerator or between the incinerator & 1st fl should 1st shut off auxiliary burner

A

D if possible shut down before flooding shaft

22
Q

Compactor rooms & units require several types of fire protections. Incorrect
A. Compactor room should be fire resistive, protected by a fire door & supplied with an automatic sprinkler
B. Water outlet & a hose are req’d in compactor room
C. Sprinkler heads shall be provided in compactor units. They shall be arranged so that they may be readily replaced, unless the heads are electrically operated
D. Electrically operated sprinkler heads are open, and are thermostatically controlled to operate at approx 135F
E. In refuse chutes in new construction, sprinklers shall be provided spaced not more than 3 stories apart for the height of the chute

A

E Spaced not more than 2 stories apart for the height of the chute. 7.5

23
Q

Compactor fire is more serious than an incinerator fire. A compactor fire is a structural fire while an incinerator fire which does not extend or communicate from the shaft is an emergency. Choose the correct for Compactor chute
A. Freeing the blockage is 1st option. Possibility of extension is greater in chute than unit
B. Off & FE team must 1st locate electrical shut off & shut power to unit before ops commence
C. 1st Eng will proceed to fl where burning material is located & stretch a line & ext the fire
D. After fire is extinguished, open the compactor unit door before the line is shut down & sprinkler OS&Y is closed to ensure complete extinguishment

A

B 8.2

24
Q
According to Dept of Buildings Rules for Construction & Maintenance of Refuse Chutes and Refuse Rooms, sprinkler heads shall be provided in compactor units. In refuse chutes constructed of new construction, sprinklers shall be provided spaced not more than _ stories apart for the height of the chute.
A: One story
B: Two stories
C: Three stories
D: Four stories
A
