What are the main features of Scabies?
Female scabies mites burrows under the skin.
Leaves eggs and faeces behind
Eggs hatch and grow into adults in about 3 weeks.
Faecal protein material responsible for allergic reaction on skin.
4-6 weeks after infection that exhibit symptoms.
Contagious - spreads by physical contact.
What are the symptoms of scabies?
All over itchy
Itching in finger webs with discreet small red lesions.
Itching worsens at night
Tracks resembling grey curved lines (about 1 cm)
What are the treatment options for scabies?
Permethrin cream (lyclear dermal cream)
Malathion liquid (Debra’s M, Quellada M)
Treat all close contacts at the same time.
Itch Tx;
- Crotamiton cream and lotion (Eurax)
- Oral antihistamines: sedating type (chlorphenamine, promethazine)
What counselling points is given for scabies?
Passed on by close personal contact - all contacts should be treated at the same time.
Application: clean, cool and dry skin, use cotton wool or a sponge usually from neck down, leave for 12-24 hrs then wash off. Repeat process after 1 week.
What symptoms warrant a referral for scabies?
If still itching after 3 weeks.
Can offer oral antihistamines or creams to help itch.
If < 2 yrs and needs to use permethrin = refer!
