What does MHRA/CHM advise regarding the use of Pregabalin? (3)
High risk of abuse/dependence:
- Schedule 3 CD.
- Observe px for signs of abuse/depedency.
- Px to be informed of interactions with alcohol, medicines that causes CNS depression particularly opioids.
Risks during pregnancy:
- Increased risks of malformations when taken during the first trimester.
- Advised on risks to unborn child and need to use of contraception during tx.
- Avoid during pregnancy unless + > -. Use lowest effective dose.
- Advised to px taking Pregabalin that are planning or become pregnant to discuss tx with GP.
Severe respiratory depression:
- HCP consider dose adjustment (especially at higher risk of respiratory depression):
- Compromised respiratory function/disease/renal impairment.
- Taking other CNS depressants (including opioid-containing medicines)
- Aged > 65 yrs.
- Px to see medical help if they experience any troubles/ shallow breathing, a noticeable change in breathing may be linked to sleepiness.
