What are the main features of Sodium Valproate? (10)

A

Major human teratogen.
Valproate not for women/girls of childbearing potential unless PPP is in place.

At the pharmacy, women/girls should expect:
- Be given a px cad every time valproate is dispensed.
- Given a PIL and if repackaged with a warning on container supplied as well.
- Reminded of risks in pregnancy and need for highly effective contraception and reminder of need for annual specialist review.
- Asked if they received px guide.

Specialist must review women/girls under PPP annually.
Pharmacist must ensure valproate medicines are dispensed in whole packs.
HCP reminded of risks in pregnancy and requirements of existing PPP. All suitable options considered and findings from safety review of anti epileptic drugs before starting valproate < 55 yrs.

2 specialist needed to independently consider and document that there’s no other effective or tolerated tx before Rx valproate for male/female px aged < 55 yrs.
