Define hand, foot and mouth disease. (1)
Viral infections causes mouth ulcers and spots on hands and feet.
Common < 10 yrs.
What are the symptoms of hand, foot and mouth disease? (4)
Clears up within 7-10 days.
Develops 3-5 days after exposure.
Initial symptoms:
- Fever (38-39 degrees)
- Generally unwell.
- Appetite loss
- Ab pain
- Coughing, sore throat and mouth.
State the main features of mouth ulcers. (3)
After 1-2 days, red spots appears on the tongue and inside the mouth.
Quickly develops into larger yellow-grey mouth ulcers with red edges.
Can be painful and make eating/drinking/difficulty in swallowing.
State the main features of spotty rashes and blisters. (2)
Soon after mouth ulcers, small rash, raised red spots on skin, on fingers/backs or palms of hand, soles of feet occassionally on buttocks and groin.
Lasts up to 10 days.
