Define Acne.
Chronic inflammatory disorder of sebaceous follicles of face, chest and back
What can cause Acne?
Increased sebum production
Follicular hyperkeratosis
Propionbacterium acnes
Inflammation
Excessive hormone response
Occluded pores
Drug induced: Oral contraceptives, phenytoin, lithium
What are the treatment options for Acne?
Benzoyl peroxide - topical oxidising agent that’s bactericidal for P.acnes and has anti-comedogenic activity (Acnecide, Quinoderm) 5-10%, Keratolytic
Causes dryness, irritation and peeling
Sunlight beneficial for acne but avoid strong sun.
Unlikely to see immediately response, usually takes up to 4 weeks to work - if no response within 2-3 months = refer
Counsel on application.
What is the referral symptoms of acne? (2)
Moderate/severe acne
Tx failure after 2-3 months.
Give e.g. of POM tx for Acne.
Azelaic acid
Tetracyclines
Topical ABx
Diane TTR
Nicotinamide (GSL - Freederm)
Isotretinoin (Roaccutane/Tretinoin)
Can take weeks/months for effect.
