Define scarlet fever. (1)
Bacterial infection caused by toxin making strains of Strep pyogenes.
What are the common symptoms of Scarlet Fever? (3)
Flu-like symptoms (high temp > 38 degrees, sore throat + swollen neck glands.)
A blanching rash appears 12-48 hrs later - small, raised bumps starts on chest then spreads.
Sandpaper like feel.
White coating on tongue. Peels leaving tongue red/swollen and covered in little bumps (strawberry tongue).
Symptoms last for 1 week.
Infectious up to 6 days before onset of symptoms until 24 hrs after 1st dose of ABx.
If no ABx, can spread for 2-3 weeks after onset of symptoms.
What self-care advice is given for Scarlet Fever?
Tx with Pen V (QDS for 10 days)
Drinking cool fluids
Eating soft foods if sore throat.
Paracetamol for fever
Using calamine lotion or antihistamines tablets to ease itching.
