What is the indication of Quinine Sulphate?
Leg cramps
What are the s/s of Quinine Sulphate? (8)
Tinnitus
Impaired Hearing
Headache
Nausea
Disturbed Vision
Confusion
Flushing
Abdominal Pain
Stopped if occurred
What is a rare s/e of Quinine Sulphate? (1)
Thrombocytopenia - hypersensitivity reactions.
What action is done if thrombocytopenia is evident when taking Quinine Sulphate? (1)
Stop tx and consult a physician if signs thrombocytopenia occur e.g. unexplained petechiae, bruising/bleeding.
What are the common drug interactions of Quinine Sulphate? (2)
Digoxin + Warfarin:
- Toxicity overdose = death or permanent visual loss.
What should be done prior to continuous tx of Quinine Sulphate? (2)
4 week trial, stopped if there’s no benefit.
If tx continues, benefits are assessed every 3 months.
What should patients be advised regarding the use of Quinine Sulphate? (2)
Warned not to exceed recommended dose.
Serious s/e = irreversible blindness and death.
Who should not be Rx Quinine Sulphate? (1)
Previously experienced ADR to quinine including found in drinks.
