Pack size restricted to 10g.
Lidocaine-containing products authorised in adults or other indications (e.g. mouth ulcers) will clearly be labelled with ‘Not suitable for treatment of teething in children.’

What does NICE guidelines state about treating teething? (2)

A

Counsel on oral lidocaine application.
Paracetamol/Ibuprofen suspension can be a considered if appropriate.

What advice is given regarding the application of oral lidocaine products? (1)

A

Gently rubbing of the gum with a clean finger and allowing the child to bite on a clean and cool object.

What is the maximum dose of oral lidocaine use? (2)

A

Apply a pea sized amount of gel to a clean fingertip and spread gently onto the sore area of the gum. If necessary, repeat dose after 3 hours.
Max 6 times in 24 hrs period.
Check licensing - certain brands > 5 months.
