What are the common signs of anaphylaxis? (3)

A

A (Airways) = Throat, tongue, upper airway swelling including throat tightening, hoarse voice, dysphagia)

B (Breathing) = Sudden onset wheezing, breathing difficulty, noisy breathing

C (Circulation) = Dizziness, lightheaded, sudden sleepiness, Fatigue, Confusion, Pale clammy skin, loss of consciousness.

Explain the don’t delay process for managing anaphylaxis. (3)

A

If you have any signs of anaphylaxis, use your AAI ASAP.

If in doubt, use it. Don’t delay.

Then dial 999 straight away.

What to do in an emergency for anaphylaxis? (4)

A

Use AAI without delay.

Immediately dial 999 - say anaphylaxis.

If not already lay down, then do so.

Use second AAI if you haven’t improved after 5 minutes.

Explain the correct positioning during anaphylaxis episode. (4)

A

Lie down flat and raise your legs.

Prop yourself up if you are struggling to breathe but don’t change position suddenly. Lie down again ASAP.

If pregnant, lie down on left side.

Don;t stand up. Stay lying down even if you are feeling better.

Explain how you can be prepared for anaphylactic episode. (4)

A
  1. There are 3 types of AAI, know how to use yours.
  2. Follow the instructions.
  3. Always carry 2 in-date AAI’s with you.
  4. Check expiry dates reqularly and replace AAI before they expire.

Explain the process of reporting a problem/fault in medicines. (1)

A

Report any suspected defective AAI to the MHRA yellow card scheme.

Keep defective AAI for investigation.
