infective 4d before, until all lesions scabbed
c pox - Sx
fever, malaise, headaches, then vesicles with crusting on trunk, face, scalp - lasts 1-2 weeks
c pox complications more common in adult infections
pneumonia, hepatitis, encephalitis
c pox other complications
disseminated infection in immcomp
2% risk of foetal damage in first 20 weeks of pregnancy
c pox mgmt
adult/immcompr -> oral aciclovir
Shingles - pathology? Sx? length?
reactivation of VZV in dorsal root ganglia
pain/tingling preceded by eruption of vesicles in dermatomal distribution (lasts 1-2 weeks)
shingles - where? 1 important feature?
commonly thoracic then cervical
patients are infectious
neuro complications of shingles
CN palsies
post-herpetic neuralgia- occurs in 30%
vestibulocochlear involvement - Ramsay Hunt syndrome
other complications of shingles
secondary infection
eye complications - Herpes Zoster Ophthalmicum
Encephalitis and meningitis
