First two stages of swallowing
oral prep - chew + mix with saliva
oral - voluntary - food moved to back by tongue
Last two steps of swallowing
Pharyngeal - involuntary - soft palate elevates, epiglottis covers trachea ,tongue moves backwards
Oesophageal - involuntary, food enters oesophagus
Two main types of causes of dysphagia
Mechanical problems
Motility problems
4 mechanical problems with swallowing
malignant stricture
benign stricture
extrinsic pressure - lung CA, goitre, AAneurysm, lymphadenopathy
pharyngeal pouch
Motility problems with swallowing
Achalasia - lower oesophageal sphincter fails to relax
diffuse oesophageal spasm
bulbar palsy
systemic sclerosis
other causes of swallowing difficulty
oesophagitis - GORD, or Candida
What is Globus Pharyngeus
sensation of lump in throat when not swallowing food
Globus pharyngeus - relief? cause?
may be relieved by swallowing
