physical abuse involves…

persistent failure to meet child's basic physical/psych needs leads to serious impairment of health/dev failing to provide: - food/clothing - shelter - protection - supervision - access to appropriate medical care
Fabricated/induced illness - describe this? give two examples?
behaviour by parents (>80% mother) causing harm to child and fulfilling parents agenda
eg verbal fabrication, induction of illness
Describe verbal fabrication
inventing Sx/signs in child -> HC pro’s think illness -> Ix and Tx - use staff as instruments to harm child through unnecessary interventions
Describe Induction of illness
suffocation of child -> ALTE (apparent life threatening event), poisoning, XS/unnecessary admin of ordinary substances eg salt, use of medicals portals of entry
organic illness may coexist
Clues for diagnosing Fabricated/induced illness
illness only apparent when parent there/following a hospital visit
suspect if child has freq unexplained illness and multiple hospital admissions
v difficult
Initial MGMT of Abuse/neglect
follow procedure of local safeguarding board
don’t accuse/condemn
document everything
trt injuries, do blood and XR’s
MGMT - if need immediate protection? consider who? alert who?
admit or use foster home
consider other kids
police/social services
MGMT - what to do with child? what meetings are set up? who attends?
detailed medical assessment
social worker evaluation
strategy meeting/child protection conference:
-social worker, health visitor, GP, police, paediatrician, teacher, lawyer, parents
What does the child protection conference decide upon?
child needs protection plan?
court application to protect child?
what follow up needed?
