1 - Opth - Introduction and Anatomy - Inner Layer Flashcards
Retina - Retinal Pigment Epithelium
- which layer? how many cells? how does it improve image? role in? controls? separated from choroid by?
outer layer, single layer of cells, opaque pigment scatters some light to improve image, role in photopigment regeneration, controls movement of substances from choroid to neuroretina, sperated from choroid by Bruch’s membrane
Retina - Neuroretina
- what are in outer layer of neuroretina? neurons project towards..? what happens at optic disc? what is the inner retina supplied by?
photoreceptor cell bodies are in outer layer of neuroretina
neurons project towards inner layer, not myelinated until the optic disc - maintaining transparency
the inner retina is supplied by the retinal capillary network ( from central retinal artery)
Photoreceptors - two types and their Fx?
Cones - colour and detailed vision - more central - fovea contains only cones
Rods - dim light vision - more abundant in periphery
10 layers of the retina..
1 - RPE 2 - Photoreceptors 3 - external limiting membrane 4 - outer nuclear layer 5 - outer plexiform layer 6 - inner nuclear layer 7 - inner plexiform layer 8 - ganglion cell layer 9 - nerve fibre layer 10 - internal limiting membrane
