5 - Opth - Acute loss of vision - Anterior Ischaemic Optic Neuropathy (AION) Flashcards
What happens
optic nerve blood supply is compromised - (posterior ciliary artery)
Arteritic AION - cased by? what is it?
giant cell arteritis (also temporal/cranial arteritis)
immune mediated vasculitis of medium and large vessels
Arteritis AION presentation (EYES)
decreased VA, RAPD, Diplopia, Optic disc swelling/atrophy
Systemic Sx of arteritis
malaise, wt loss, myalgia
Arteritic AION presentation (non eye)
jaw claudication
tender scalp
temporal headache
abnormal temporal artery
Investigation for Arteritic AION
CRP/ESR raised,
temporal artery biopsy, (high false -ve due to skip lesions)
MGMT of arteritic AION
oral prednisolone
may take >1y to settle
NON-arteritic AION - causes/associations
eg atherosclerosis/thromboembolism (ass w HTN, smoking, Dm ,high lipids) , Hypotension
