Causes
Viral - usually adenovirus
Bacterial -
Allergic
Sx
gritty/itchy discomfort eye watering Discharge -bact - sticky/purulent -viral - watery -allergic -stringy Photophobia is corneal involvement (rare)
Signs
Red and inflamed conjunctiva
VA, reflexes, cornea appearance usually unchanged
Lid appearance - Follicular = viral and Papillae = allergic
lymphadenopathy in viral infection
Chlamydia conjunctivits
suspect in young
green stringy discharge in morning
inferior conjunctival follicles
preauricular lymph nodes
Management of conjunctivitis
viral/allergic usually self limiting - bact needs treatment
-chloramphenicol drops, fusidic acid drops, ciprofloxacin drops
antihistamine drops for allergic
Subconjunctival haemorrhage - 2 features
painless, sudden onset
Subconjunctival haemorrhage - associations
possibly with trauma, or spontaneous (HTN, coughing/sneezing, bleeding disorder, warfarin)
Subconjunctival haemorrhage - Signs
VA normal
Well defined area of redness
