common cold (coryzal), sore throat (pharyngitis, tonsillitis), AOM, Sinusitis
why might admission be needed for infants?
need to r/o more serious infection
inadequate feeding
or parental reassurance
common presentation of URTI
nasal discharge/blockage, fever, painful throat, earache, cough may be troublesome
URTIs may cause? (3)
acute exacerbation of asthma
febrile convulsions
feeding difficulty in infants > blocked nose/obstructed breathing
common cold - pathogens? advise parents how? mgmt?
commonly viral - RSV, coronavirus, rhinovirus
advise - self-limiting and has no curative treatment
paracetamol/ibuprofen for fever/pain - ABx unnecessary
sore throat (pharyngitis) what happens?
soft palate/pharynx inflam
local LNs enlarged/tender
sore throat pathogens?
usually viral - adenovirus, enterovirus, rhinovirus
Gr A B-haemolytic strep common in older kids
sinusitis - what may occur with viral URTIs? occasionally what happens?
infection of paranasal sinuses may occur with viral URTIs
occ secondary bact infection with pain swelling, and cheek tenderness due to maxillary sinus infection
mgmt of acute sinusitis?
ABx, analgesia, topical decongestants
advice to parents caring for child with URTI
mgmt should be using
reassurance
signs to look for to indicate it is worsening
