Pharmacologic classification
Angiotensin 2 receptor blocker
Therapeutic effects and uses
Used for the treatment of hypertension, stroke, and the prevention of type 2 diabetic nephropahypertrophy.
Mechanism of action
Block angiotensin AT1 receptors which causes blood pressure to decline. (Reduces blood volume which is because of vasodilation)
Adverse effects
Headache, dizziness, orthostatic hypotension, fatigue, diarrhea, upper respiratory infection
Black box warning
Fetal injury death may occur
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity
Pregnancy and lactation
Kidney or liver probs
Hypokalemia
Drug interactions
NSAIDs= decrease antihypertensive activity
Potassium and potassium-soaring diuretics= hyperkalemia
Diuretic and antihypertensives= additive hypotension
Alcohol= additive hypotension
Lithium= levels can get increased
Herbal/food interactions
Hawthorn= additive hypotension
Treatment of overdose
Normal saline or a vasopressor
