Therapeutic
Analgesic, anti-inflammatory drug, antipyretic
Pharmacologic classification
NSAID
Therapeutic uses and effects
Used to treat inflammation and fevers and pain. Not used for cardiac issues
Mechanism of action
Inhibits inflammatory cell chemotaxis, decreases the release of superoxide radicals, and increases the scavenging of these products at the inflammatory site.
Adverse effects
GI related issues (bleeding, anorexia, heartburn, nausea, vomiting, and constipation or diarrhea) (kinda the same as aspirin). CNS effects (dizziness, headache, drowsiness, and lightheadedness) Other (hypotension, heart failure, peripheral edema)
Black box warning
May increase the risk of serious and potentially fatal cardiovascular thrombin events, myocardial infarction, and stroke
Contraindications/ precautions
Contraindications: allergy to aspirin or other NSAIDs, PUD, GERD, bleeding abnormalities, pain related to CABG(coronary artery bypass graft)
Drug interactions
Oral anticoagulants and anti platelet drugs increase risk of bleeding. Increased GI probs if taken with other NSAIDs, alcohol, corticosteroids.
Herbal/food interactions
Feverfew, garlic, ginger, and gingko can increase risk of bleeding
Treatment of overdose
Charcoal and nasogastric suction
