Prototype Drug Unit 8 & 9- Ipratropium Flashcards
Classification
Bronchodilator and Anticholinergic
What is it used for
Used to prevent bronchospasm in people with asthma or COPD. It inhibits nasal secretions but does not have decongestant action.
Adverse effects
Dry mouth, nausea, GI distress
Bitter taste
headache, cough, blurred vision, paradoxical bronchospasm, worsening of narrow-angle glaucoma
Contraindications
hypersensitivity to soya lecithin or related food products such as soybean and peanut
closed-angle glaucoma or urinary tract obstruction
How does it work?
blocks cholinergic receptors in bronchial smooth muscle. Intranasal blocks parasympathetic receptors, thus reducing nasal hypersecretions
Drug interactions
anticholinergics (atropine)
Pramlintide because both slow GI peristalsis and can cause nausea, vomiting, or constipation
