Thyroid hormone replacement
What is it used for?
Hypothyroidism
Adverse effects
Tremors, headache, nervousness, or insomnia.
palpitations, tachycardia, angina, and cardiac arrest
Contraindications
hypersensitivity, adrenal sufficiency, any heart problems (caution)
Drug interactions
colestipol, calcium or aluminum antacids, sucralfate, and iron supplements= decrease absorption
pheytoin, caramazepine, rifampin, phenobarbital, and sertraline= increased metabolism
increases bleeding risk with warfarin
digoxin= decreases effectiveness
Herbal/food interactions
soybean flower, cottenseed meal, walnuts, and dietary fiber= decreased absorption
Calcium or iron supplements should be take at least 4 hours after to prevent interference with drug absorption.
Strawberries, peaches, pears, cabbage, turnips, spinach, kale, brussels sprouts, radishes, and peas
Treatment of overdose
circulating thyroid hormone with antithyroid drugs decreasing sympathetic stimulation with corticosteroid and beta-adrenergic blockers
Important info
Start with low dosage and increase= effect can take 6-8 weeks
Take 1st thing in the morning
