Therapeutic effects and uses
It is used to relieve acute migraine headaches.
Mechanism of action
Sumatriptan activates the 5-HT1 serotonin receptors on intracranial and extracerebral blood vessels.

PO, intranasal, subcutaneous
Absorption
15% PO; 97% subcutaneous
Distribution
Widely distributed; crosses the placenta; secreted in breast milk; less than 21% bound to plasma protein

Hepatic
Primary excretion
60% renal; 40% feces
Adverse effects
mild and transient dizziness or nausea, diarrhea, mylagia, and inflammation and pain at the subcutaneous injection site.
Contraindication/Precautions
Contraindication: coronary artery disease, cerebrovascular disease, or peripheral vascular disease. Uncontrolled hypertensions, hyperholesterolemia, or people who have a family history of cardiovascular disease. Serious renal or hepatic impairments. Pregnant women
Drug interactions
Should not be used within 2 weeks of MAOIs or SSRIs. Should be avoided withing 24 hours of ergot alkaloids.
Herbal/food interactions
St. John’s wort and feverfew should be avoided during therapy with sumatriptan
