Classification
Bronchodilator and beta2 adrenergic agonist
What is it used for?
It is a short-acting that is used to relieve and prevent brochospasms. It has a rapid onset and should be inhaled 15-30 min before physical activity
How does it work?
selectively binds to becta2 receptors in bronchial smooth muscle to cause bronchodilation
Adverse effects
Sympathetic effects (palpitations, headaches, throat irritation, tremor, nervousness, restlesness, and tachycardia) drug tolerance, dizziness, and hyperglycemia
Contraindications
hypersensitivity, people with a history of tachyarrhythmias, prolongation of the QT interval, coronary artery disease, or hypertension
Drug interactions
beta blockers will inhibit the bronchodilation effect of albuterol. Avoid MAOIs within 14 days of therapy. Thyroid hormone may produce additive stimulatory effects on the cardiovascular system
