Therapeutic classification
Antibacterial
Pharmacologic classification
Bacterial protein synthesis inhibitor, macrolide
Therapeutic effects and uses
Treatment and prophylaxis or susceptible bacterial infections. Used for patients who are allergic to penicillin or who have resistance to it.
Mechanism of action
Inhibits bacterial production synthesis by binding to the 50s ribosomal subunit
Adverse effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping, dry skin, or burning.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity, be careful with patients that have impaired biliary or hepatic function because of the possibility of cholestatic hepatitis ( blocking in the bile ducts of the liver that causes inflammation)
Drug interactions
Digoxin and warfarin can cause abnormal bleeding, don’t take with clindamycin, or chloramphenicol.
Herbal/ food interactions
Grapefruit juice increases bioavailability
