What is the classification
A
Fluid expander, Crystalloid

What is it used for
A
Replace lost water and to enhance renal function. In all cases dextrose is an added source of calories and nutrition

How does it work
A
If insulin is present, glucose (dextrose) enters cells and is convered into ATP, CO2, and water

Adverse effects
A
peripheral edema, pulmonary edema, and heart failure. Hyperglycemia is possible. Hyponatremia is also possible because of diluted body fluids.

Contraindications
A
Heart failure, hyperglycemic, intracranial pressure, people allergic to corn

Treatment of overdose
A
Diuretics may be indicated in cases of fluid overload
