What does pantoprazole do?
It blocks gastric acid secretion
Why is pantoprazole the drug of choice for peptic ulcer disease?
They work better than H2 receptor antagoinists
What are the adverse effects of pantoprazole?
Headache, diarrhea, rash, and abdominal pain
What is Ranitidine?
An H2 receptor antagonist that suppresses gastric acid secretion
What is Ranitidine used for?
To suppress gastric acid secretion
How is Ranitidine usually given?
It is usually given in IV form, onset is 30-60 min and peak is 1-3 hours
What can Ranitidine cause?
Musculoskeletal pain and tachycardia
What are the adverse effects of Ranitidine?
Tachycardia and dry mouth
What is Sulcrafate, and when should it be taken?
A coating agent, given one hour before meals
What are the adverse effects of antacids?
Can cause constipation, fluid retention if contains sodium
What do you need to figure out before giving antacids
Figure out when to give them so that they are not taken with other medications so that they do not interfere with the absorption of meds
