Primary use is for influenza
Mechanism of action
Not known, but thought to inhibit viral replication by preventing uncoating
Adverse effects
Nausea, dizziness, nervousness, difficulty concentrating, insomnia
Contraindications
CNS disease, suicidal ideation, psychiatric disorders. Renal impairment, cardiac disease. Should not be abruptly stopped in Parkinson’s disease patients
Drug interactions
Alcohol, Anticholinergic drugs, Dopamine antagonists, Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazle
Treatment of overdose
Physostigmine to control CNS symptoms and anticonulsants if necessary. Acidic drugs enhances renal excretion. Antidysrhythmics and antihypertensives may be administered to manage cardiovascular toxicity
