Bronchodilator and Methylxanthine
What is it used for
chronic asthma or COPD
How does it work?
Relaxes bronchial smooth muscle and suppresses airway responsiveness to stimuli
Adverse effects
Nervousness, tremor, dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting, anorexia
Contraindication
seizure disorders, heart failure, or cardiac dysrhythmias, PUD
Drug interactions
Antibiotics (ciproflaxcin, clarithromycin, erythromycin)
Antianxiety (diazepam, flurazepam, lorazepam, midazolam)
epinephrine, norepinephrin, and isoproterenol
Herbal/food interactions
caffeine
St. John’s wort= decrease effectiveness
Treatment of overdose
Charcoal, barbiturates or benzodiazepines, or drugs like lidocaine for seizures
