Therapeutic classification
Nonopioid analgesic, antipyretic
Pharmacologic classification
Para-aminophenol derivative
Therapeutic effects and uses
relieves mild to moderate pain but has no effect on inflammation. Used for osteoarthritis of the hip or knee, dysmenorrhea, dental procedures, headache, and myalgia. Used for fevers. It is okay for infants, children, and adolescents who have flulike symptoms or chickenpox
Mechanism of action
Inhibits COX in the CNS but not in peripheral tissues. Goes directly to the heat-regulating center of the hypthalamus to produce peripheral vasodilation, sweating, and dissipation of heat.
Adverse effects
Anorexia, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, lethargy, diaphoresis, chills, epigastric or abdominal pain, and diarrhea.
Black Box Warning
Can cause severe liver injury and may cause serious allergic reactions with symptoms of angioedema (swelling from the throat up), difficulty breathing itching, rash
Contraindications
Allergic to it, renal impairment
Drug interactions
Alcohol increases hepatotoxicity (kill the liver)
Herbal/ food interactions
Caffeine will enhance the analgesic effects. Hepatotoxicity occurs when used with echinacea
