Prototype Drug Unit 8 & 9- 0.9% Sodium Chloride (Normal Saline) Flashcards
What class of drugs is Normal Saline
Crystalloid
What are crystalloids made of?
They contain electrolytes and other substances in concentrations that closely resemble the body’s extracellular fluid
What are crystalloids used to treat?
shock and depleted fluids to promote urine output
Is 0.9% Sodium Chloride Isotonic, Hypotonic, or Hypertonic?
Isotonic
What are Isotonic solutions used to treat?
they are used to expand circulating intravascular (plasma) fluid volume. Often used for fluid loss because of vomiting, diarrhea, surgical procedures, and also hyponatremia (low sodium)
Should a dehydrated patient with normal blood pressure be given a isotonic, hypotonic, or hypertonic crystalloid?
Hypotonic because it will hydrate cells without expanding plasma volume and increasing BP
Should a dehydrated patient with low blood pressure be given an isotonic, hypotonic, or hypertonic crystalloid?
Isotonic because normal saline or 5% Dextrose in Water will cause blood pressure to rise because of the increasing plasma volume
