Therapeutic classfication
Antiepileptic drug, antianxiety drug, skeletal muscle relaxant
Pharmacologic classification
Benzodiazepine, GABA receptor agonist
Therapeutic effects and uses
Used for epilepticus, to prevent seizures in patient who have alcohol or benzodiazepine withdrawal. Also used for anxiety disorders.
Mechanism of action
Enhances the action of GABA in the brain, which inhibits seizures
Adverse effects
Sedation, headache, drowsiness, weakness, veritgo, ataxia, paradoxical excitement, short-term amnesia
Contraindications
Depressed vital signs, shock, alcohol intoxiation, narrow-angle glaucoma. Be careful with patients who have depression, myasthenia gravis, liver or kidney probs, COPD. Don’t give it pregnant or lactating people unless its like really really needed.
Herbal/food interactions
Kava and valerian= additive sedative effects
Echinacea lowers serum levels
Grapefruit juice decreases the peak of the drug
Drug interactions
CNS depressants= intensify sedative effects
inatiparkinsonism meds worsen parkinson’s disease
Phenytoin increases toxicity
Don’t give withing 14 days of an MAOI
Treatment of overdose
Benzodiazepien receptor antagonist to reverse the CBS depression
