Pharmacologic classification
Bacterial protein synthesis inhibitor, tetracycline
Therapeutic effects and uses
Used for the treatment and prophylaxis of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Used to kill H. Pylori.
Mechanism of action
The growing amino acid chain of the bacterial is prematurely terminated and protein synthesis is inhibited.
Adverse effects
Can affect vaginal, oral, and intestinal flora and cause super infections. Nausea, vomiting, epigastric burning, diarrhea, discoloration of teeth and photosensitivity.
Contraindications
Allergic to it, not be used during pregnancy, be careful with patients who have hepatic or renal impairment.
Drug interactions
Oral supplements, laxatives, or antacids that contain calcium, iron, magnesium, or aluminum. Decreases the effectiveness of oral contraceptives.
