Antibacterial
Pharmacologic classification
Cell wall inhibitor aminopenicillin
Therapeutic effects and uses
Similar to penicillins but are different because they have a broader spectrum that includes enhanced activity over enterococci
Adverse effects
Rash and diarrhea. Anaphylactic response may include cardiovascular collapse; edema of the mouth, tongue, pharynx, and larynx, confusion; seizure; and hallucinations
Contraindications/precautions
Don’t give it to people who are allergic to it and monitor people with kidney disease
Drug interactions
Decreases the effects of oral contraceptives, Probenecid decreases secretion, Penecillins antagonize aminoglycoside antibiotics and should be taken 2 hours apart. Effects are diminished if taken with chloramphenicol, erythromycin, or tetracyclines
Herbal/food interactions
Food decreases absorption= take on empty stomach
