Antidysrhythmic, Class 3
Pharmacologic classification
Potassium channel blocker
Therapeutic effects and uses
It is used as a broad-spectrum antidysrhythmic because it works for treating against atrial and ventricular dysrhythmias.
Also approved for resistant ventricular tachycardia
Mechanism of action
Not known
Adverse effects
Nausea, vomiting, anorexia, fatigue, dizziness, hypotension, visual disturbances, rashes.
Can have photosensitivity!
Black box warning (oral form only)
Causes a pneumonia like syndrome in the lungs.
Baseline lung function test is essential!
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity
Hypokalemia and hypomagnesisemia should be corrected before treatment.
People with respiratory problems
Drug interactions
Digoxin= levels can rise by 70%
Anticoagulants= dose should be cut in half
Beta blockers and CCB= sinus bradycardia, sinus arrest, or AV block
Herbal/food interactions
Echinacea= increases liver toxicity
Grapefruit juice= increases serious level by 80%
