Therapeutic classification
Anti-inflammatory
Pharmacologic classification
COX-2 inhibitor, NSAID
Therapeutic effects and uses
Used for moderate pain and inflammation associated with RA, osteoarthritis, dysmenorrhea, dental procedures, headache, and ankylosing spondyllitis. It is also an effective antipyretic agent
Mechanism of action
Celecoxib selectively inhibits the enzyme COX-2. This reduces inflammation and relieves pain in the joints and smooth muscle tissue
Adverse effects
back pain, peripheral edema, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, flatulence, dizziness, headache, insomnia, HTN
Contraindications/Precautions
Hepatic insufficiency, advanced renal disease, anemia or in the postoperative phase of CABG, history of GI bleeding or PUD, don’t use with anticoagulants because it increases risk for bleeding
Drug interactions
anticoagulants, alcohol, corticosteriods, aspirin, or other NSAIDs seriously affects GI.
Herbal/food interactions
feverfew, garlic, ginger, ginkgo, horse chestnut, and red clover my increase risk of bleeding (pretty much the same as Ibuprofen)
Treatment of overdose
Make them poop it out or throw it up
