Cell wall inhibitor, first-generation cephalosporin
Therapeutic effects and uses
Used for prophylaxis of bacterial infections caused by gram-positive organisms. It is not effective against MRSA. Used to treat infections of the respiratory tract, urinary tract, skin structures, biliary tract, bones, and joints. Used for genital infections, septicemia, and endocarditis.
Mechanism of action
Inhibits the bacterial wall synthesis by binding to specific PBPs.
Adverse effects
Rash and Diarrhea. Superinfections are likely when it is used for prolonged periods of time.
Contraindications
Don’t give it to people who are allergic to it. Monitor people with kidney problems
Drug interactions
Probenecid decreases the excretion. Nephrotoxic drugs like aminoglycosides or vancomycin increases risk for killing kidneys. Synergistic antimicrobial action with other antibiotics such as aztreonam, carapenems, and the penicillins. If taken with warfarin can increase the anticoagulant effects.
