Therapeutic effects and uses
Used with trihexyphenidyl or levodopa/carbidopa to treat Parkinson’s disease.
Mechanism of action
Reduces the excess cholinergic effect with dopamine deficiency and restores neurotransmitter balance
Adverse effects
Nausea, constipation, dry mouth, blurred vision, drowsiness, dizziness, tachycardia, hypotension, nervousness
Contraindications
closed-angle glaucoma, maysthenia gravis, tardive dyskinesia, GI or urinary obstruction, prostatic hypertorphy, peptic ulcer, tachycardia, and children under 3
Drug interactions
other anticholinergic will create and additive effect. Alcohol and other CNS depressants will create an additive sedative effect. Antidiarrheals will slow GI motility and decrease absorption
Herbal/food interactions
Kava decreases effect. Jimsonweed or butterbur increases effects
Treatment of overdose
Physostigmine will reverse symptoms of anticholinergic intoxication.
