Used mostly for the treatment of malaria
Mechanism of action
Cuts off the food vacuole of the red blood cells in humans and prevents the parasite from eating from them. The parasite instead eats the drug and it builds to toxic levels in the parasite
Adverse effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, visual changes, including blurred vision, photophobia, difficulty focusing
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity, Retina probs, Porphyria, liver impairment, and kidney impairment
Drug interactions
Antacids and laxatives containing aluminum and magnesium. Cimetidine, rabies vaccine, antidysrhythmics, phenothiazines, and beta-adrenergic agonists
