Antihyperlipidemic
Pharmacologic classification
Fabric acid drug (fibrate)
Therapeutic effects and uses
Lowers triglycerides and LDL cholesterol. Used for patients who have hypertriglyceridemia and VLDL.
Mechanism of action
Inhibits the breakdown of stored fat, or lipolysis, in adipose tissue. By sopping the uptake of free fatty acids by the liver, hepatic reproduction of triglycerides is decreased
Adverse effects
GI related (abdominal cramping, diarrhea, nausea, and dyspepsia) Nervous system (headaches, dizziness, peripheral neuropathy, and diminished libido)
Contraindications
Don’t give to people with liver or gallbladder probs. Be careful with people who have kidney probs.
Drug interactions
Combined with statins= Myositis and rhabdomyolysis
PO anticoagulants= risk of bleeding because fibrates displace warfarin from its plasma binding proteins
Anti diabetic drugs= enhance low blood sugar effects
Important info
Take with meals in order to decrease GI problems
