Used for treating severe systemic mycoses and may also be indicated for prophylactic antifungal therapy for immunosuppressant patients.

Mechanism of actions
Acts by binding to ergosterol in fungal cell membranes, causing them to be permeable
Adverse effects
Hypoklemia, hypomagnesemia, rash, fever and chills, nausea, vomiting, anorexia, headache
Black Box Warning
Nonliposomal form should only be used on patients with a potentially life-threatening fungal infection
Contraindications
May cause shock if given too quickly. Should be withheld if blood urea nitrogen exceeds 40 mg/dL
Drug interactions
Should not be taken with aminoglycosides, cyclosporine, vancomycin, carboplatin, and furosemide. Corticosteriods, skeletal muscle relaxants and thiazole can cause hypokalemia. Azoles should not be used with this drug
