Pharmacologic classificaiton
Bacterial protein synthesis inhibitor, aminoglycoside
Therapeutic effects and uses
Used for the treatment and prophylaxis of susceptible bacterial infections. Prescribed for serious infections caused by aerobic, gram-negative bacilli
Mechanism of action
inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal unit.
Adverse effects
Rash, nausea, vomiting, and fatigue, pain or inflammation at the injection site, tinnitus, diarrhea, dizziness
Black Box Warning
May cause severe neurotoxicity, neuromuscular blockade and respiratory paralysis, nephrotoxicity
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity, be careful giving it to patients who have problems with their kidneys or hearing.
Drug interactions
Don’t use with other nephrotoxic drugs, Pencillins can inactivate aminoglycosides.
