What is it used for?
Used as a laxative, but mostly used as an anticonvulsant or to stop contractions in pre-term labor or during labor and delivery.
Main use is for Magnesium deficiency
Adverse effects
Toxicity (flushed skin, sedation, confusion, intense thirst, and muscle weakness)
Contraindications
cardiac disease, undiagnosed abdominal pain, intestinal obstruction, or fecal impaction.
Renal impairment
Drug interactions
CNS depressants because it will increase sedation
Herbal/Food interactions
Magnesium salts may decrease absorption of anti-infectives like tetracycline
Treatment of overdose
Calcium gluconate or gluceptate via IV (because of serious respiratory suppression and cardiac suppression)
