Classification
Antidiabetic drug
Sulfonylurea
What is it used for
Lowering blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes
How does it work?
Stimulates the release of insulin from pancreatic beta cells and increases the sensitivity of peripheral tissues to insulin
Adverse effects
Hypoglycemia (too much medications or not eating enough food)
weight gain, hypersensitivity, GI distress, and hepatotoxicity
Contraindications
sensitivity to sulfa drugs or thiazide diuretics
Type 1 diabetes (Diabetic coma, DKA)
Drug interactions
Alcohol can cause hypo or hyperglycemia
nausea, vomiting, flushing, and palpitations
Anticoagulants, MAOIs, probenecid, sulfonamides, chloramphenicol, osyphenbutazone, phenylbutazone, salicylates, and clofibrate = increases hypoglycemia
Thiazides and rifampin= increased hyperglycemia
Herbal/Food interactions
Ginseng, garlic, black cohosh,juniper berries, fenurgreek, coriander, or dandelion root= hypoglycemia
Treatment of overdose
Glucose (Dextrose)
