Therapeutic effects and uses
Used to reduce elevated levels of cholesterol in people with hypercholesterolemia (elevated LDL).
Important things to know
Drug should be mixed with non carbonated beverages, highly liquid soups, or pulpy fruits (applesauce, crushed pineapple) to prevent esophageal irritation. The patient should swallow the med immediately after stirring.
Could take 30 days or longer for cholestyramine to produce its maximum effect
Mechanism of action
Binds to bile acid forming an insoluble complex containing cholesterol that is excreted in the feces.
Adverse effects
Constipation, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, bloating, dyspepsia
Contraindications
People with GI disorders should not have it because this drug can worsen conditions. Don’t give to people who have biliary obstruction.
Drug interactions
Absorption is affected when taken with digoxin, penicillin, iron supplements, thyroid hormone, and thiazide diuretics. May increase effects of warfarin. IT SHOULD BE TAKEN 1 HOUR BEFORE OR 4 HOURS AFTER OTHER PO DRUGS!!!!
Herbal food interactions
Blocks absorption of iron and fat-soluble vitamins in food
