Therapeutic classification
Antiviral for herpesvirsuses
Pharmacologic classification
Nucleoside (Deosyguanosine) analog
Therapeutic effects and uses
Mostly used to treat herpes because HIV and AIDS have developed a resistance to the drug.
Mechanism of action
Inhibits viral replications of enzymes. Once the acyclovir is inserted into the growing DNA chain, viral DNA synthesis is stopped, and then the replications ceases.
Adverse effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, pain, inflammation at injection sites
Contraindications
Monitor people with kidney problems. Lower dose and encourage lots of fluids in people with crystalluria
Drug interactions
Probenecid, zidovudine, and additive nephrotoxicity if taken with aminoglycosides
