Leukostasis Flashcards
1
Q
Slam dunk clinical features
A
- altered mental status
2
Q
Treatment options for management of leukostasis
A
high dose hydrea OR leukopheresis (studies have shown comparable outcomes)
3
Q
Meds you can use to bring down WBC rapidly
A
Hydrea
*Cytarabine
4
Q
Level of hyperleukocytosis at which patients typically become symptomatic + caveat
A
Greater than 100k
*but you can have symptoms of leukostasis at lower leukocyte counts
5
Q
most commonly seen in which conditions?
A
- AML
- CML in blast crises occasionally
- Waldenstrom’s?
- Rarely seen in ALL, CLL
6
Q
Pathophysiology
A
- increased blood viscosity due to a large population of leukemic blasts, which are less deformable than mature leukocytes
7
Q
when to not use leukapheresis
A
- APML (may worsen intrinsic coagulopathy and placement of leukapheresis catheters)
