TERMS Flashcards
multisystem, chronic disease of autoimmune origin characterized by relapses and remission, affecting principally the skin, joints, kidney, heart and serosal membranes
SLE
name this lupus variant?
skin involvement scaly erythematous plaques atrophic scars face and scalp immunoflourescence
35% are positive ANA, but rarely antibodies to dsDNA
chronic discoid lupus erythematosus
name this lupus variant?
skin involvement
widespread but superficial
mild systemic disease
strong assoc with anti SS-A and with HLA-DR3
subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus
name this lupus variant?
lupus like syndrome develops in patients receiving certain drugs (hydralazine, procainamide, isoniazid, D-penicillamine)
drug-induced lupus erythematosus
a clfinicopathologic entity characterized by dry eyes(keratoconjunctivitis sic) and dry mouth(xerostomia) from immunologically mediated destruction of lacrimal and salivary glands
sjogren’s syndrome
excessive fibrosis in multiple tissues, obliterative vascular disease and evidence of autoimmunity
scleroderma
describes a disease with clinical features of SLE, polymyositis and scleroderma and serologically by high titers of anti-RNP
paucity of renal disease
good response to corticosteroids
mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD)
skin and muscle involvement found in children or adults
dermatomyositis
symmetric proximal muscle weakness, no cutaneous involvement; occurs mainly in adults
polymyositis
insidious beginning with asymmetric involvement of distal muscles
affects > 50 yr olds
Cd8+ cytotoxic T cells present
morphology: presence of rimmed vacuoles present in myocytes, vacuoles rimmed by basophilic granules, vacuolated fibers contain amyloid deposits
inclusion body myositis
