HIGH YIELD-CLINICAL FEATURES Flashcards
name this diabetes mellitus type?
abrupt onset by age 20 polyuria, polydipsia, polyphagia ketosis weight loss muscle weakness
DM T1
name this diabetes mellitus type?
obese polyuria, polydipsia hyperosmolar non-ketotic coma metabolic derangements less severe diagnosis made after routine blood testing
DM T2
usually seen in type I DM brought on by infection or illness
ketoacidosis/ketosis
low glucose levels, usually complication of insulin therapy, defined as < 55-60 mg/dL
hypoglycemia
below 70 mg/dL means this can be seen in normal post prandial individuals
*some diabetics can be symptomatic below 70 mg/dL
what is the limiting factor in the glycemic managemnt of diabetes mellitus
hypoglycemia
what is hypoglycemia unawareness?
*what is the 1st sign of hypoglycemia?
insulin levels do not fall with hypoglycemia so they stay hypoglycemic
glucagon response dimishes
lose epinephrine response
- neurohypoglycemia
- visual disturbances
- CNS symptoms
usually in DM T2 with 30-50% mortality and brought on by MI, PE, sepsis
dehydration
sunken eyes
cool skin thready pulse
what would lab findings indicate?
hyperosmolar non-ketotic coma
hyperglycemia, no ketones, lack of significant metabolic acidosis, total body stores of potassium depleted
